Hey Harsanik readers, it's Manifa again and I'm back with another wedding update. You can catch up on my wedding planning adventures on my blog series: Manifa's Story. I have been waiting and waiting to book this vendor for almost a year and a half and I am FINALLY able to confirm that Emin and I have booked a cake vendor! I'm pretty sure everyone dreams of going cake tasting. I mean it's FREE CAKE that you get to try multiple flavors of until you find the perfect flavor! It was this sweet lovers dream!
Before we even started the fun part of finding our cake I did what I always do; went to the Harsanik directory and searched for Cake & Dessert vendors. I looked at the most reviewed vendors and started making my contact list. I will say that I was a little shocked that many of the vendors wouldn't book for my wedding date a year and a half in advanced, therefore my list sat in my binder for about a year before I could actually go cake tasting! Finally, the day arrived where I could grab Emin and go taste some cakes.
Our cake vendor list looked something like this:
- Dress My Cake
- Roobina's Cake
- Rafi Pastry
- Cake Studio LA
- Custom Designer Cakes
I was ready to find our perfectly perfect sweet cake! After calling all the vendors I was a little surprised that a few of them wouldn't do a cake tasting until I booked with them. I couldn't go into the sweetest part of my wedding blindly, so I thanked them and cut them from our list. One of the vendors was really awesome and said they would deliver small portions of their cake and Emin and I could sit and enjoy them in our own time and let them know which flavor we wanted. We had to pay for the samples, which I wasn't very happy about, but that amount went towards our cake if we hired them for our wedding. The story behind this cake tasting was what I would say was extremely frustrating.
After texting someone back and forth for about two weeks to set up a time and place to pick up our samples I was ready for my first cake tasting. I was a little disappointed when I met up the owner and she handed me a small container with melted cake samples. She explained to me that because she made her frosting with buttercream it melted easily. This was a bit of a red flag for me because my wedding is in summer and I don't want my cake melting before I even get to my reception! But I was still ridiculously excited to try some cake. Of course, Emin and I planned on going to a hookah lounge to taste some cake! Here is my advice for all brides, DO NOT; I REPEAT DO NOT hand a melting box of sample cakes to the groom if you want them to stay intact before you get someplace. Emin decided that, even after I told him to keep the samples sturdy, to mess around with me like he was going to drop them. You know what happened? HE DROPPED THEM! He ruined my perfectly melty samples. I was furious! After being upset with him for a few minutes I got over it and we decided to have some tea, cake, and hookah. My disappointment didn't really end up going away; the cakes tasted horrible. They were wet and tasteless! I had asked for sweet frosting and sweet cake and got the complete opposite! That vendor was out.
After our first tasting went wrong we were a little hesitant about going into our second appointment. With our hyrdroflasks full of water we walked into our next appointment with high hopes. This cake tasting was definitely different from our first. The vendor had us meet her in her office. When we got there she was ready to impress. The first thing we LOVED about her was her creativity and attention to detail! She busted out some color pencils and paper and started drawing out what we envisioned for our wedding cake. Seeing it come to life on paper was amazing. We got to work with her and fix every small little detail until the cake looked perfect. Then came the tasting. The vendor brought us both a plate with a variety of flavors that were placed from least sweetest to most. We were told to try the ones with less sugar first so that our taste palette was not compromised by going back and forth. We were both very pleased with the cake that we tasted. Emin and I had a moment to talk alone and we decided that we like this vendor, but we still wanted to go to our last appointment before making a decision. Walking out we were very pleased with what we had seen and tasted and were confident with that vendor.
Our last appointment was actually set up by my aunt who knew the vendor personally. We felt a little bit like royalty meeting with them because we were truly treated like a King and Queen. This vendor also took out a pencil and paper and started drawing out the design of our cake. We explained to them what we wanted exactly and again they were able to see our vision and draw out a beautiful cake. After we had the design down the cake tasting began. We were brought a beautiful platter of tiny little cakes that looked DELICIOUS. After taking a bite of the first flavor both Emin and I were blown away by how perfectly spongy and sweet the cake portion actually was! All the actual cake flavors tickled out taste buds. We were in cake heaven. Then it came down to picking the filling flavor. I already knew I wanted red velvet, but Emin had fallen in love with a white chocolate cake with white chocolate buttercream. We both couldn't give up what we wanted; that's when the vendor said, "Well you can have two flavors." That was the moment we knew we found our cake vendor! The design was perfect, we got two AMAZING flavored cakes, and we knew we could trust the vendor because she came highly recommended by my family! The choice was obvious. We ended up going with Roobina's Cake for our wedding!
Without giving away any juicy details I will say that Emin and I really wanted to stray from the traditional style wedding cake and do something a bit different for our wedding. After all, we have really come up with ideas that are out of the box and not very traditional. Roobina even joked around asking if my mom was okay with what I had chosen for our cake. She isn't, but at the end of the day it's mine and Emin's wedding and we have a specific vision in mind. I cannot WAIT to eat my cake on my wedding day. I already know I will be having one of each flavor on my big day!
Slowly, but surely our wedding is coming together. We still have a few vendors we need to hire, but we still have a bit of time before our big day, until then "Happy Planning!"
