For Better Or For Worse: Wedding Tech Trends

Written by . Posted in Articles & Guides

As trends in fashion, cuisine and beauty are constantly evolving, so are standards in the wedding industry. Weddings have become a reflection of the latest styles and tastes across every imaginable market. And one major trend that’s adapted its way into ceremonies and receptions is technology.

Just like the vows, “For better or for worse,” tech is here to stay, for better or for worse. While the addition of technology into weddings has been met with mixed reviews among brides, there’s no denying that our obsession for all things digital has caused a big shift in matrimonial behaviors.

We spoke with with Vrej Sarkissian, CEO of Anoush Catering and LA Banquets, who shared some of the ways that technology has “altared” the way of the wedding.

Sources of Inspiration

Before the days of Pinterest, blogs, and wedding forums, a bride-to-be would pour through countless magazines and paper-bound books to gather ideas. You could bookmark your favorite pages and pick up the phone to call vendors for additional info. These days, the endless digital corkboards on Pinterest provide a great source of wedding inspiration, right at your fingertips. Plus, these websites are free to use, while the cost of purchasing wedding books can quickly add up.

Information Station

Long before the convenience of the world wide web, brides would include pertinent info on their wedding invitations. Then came the idea of wedding websites - a site dedicated to providing your guests with every detail they would need. Not only can you fit a lot more information on a website versus an invitation, you can also share personal details, like how you met your partner, updates on the wedding planning process, and where you’re registered.

Capturing the Memories

While you can rest assured that your photographer will provide you with stunning portraits from the wedding, part of the fun of being a guest is snapping your own pics. Once upon a time, those yellow disposable cameras were tucked into every girl’s purse, which have since been replaced with smartphones.

This phenomenon comes with its ups and downs. Some brides are thrilled to have tons of extra candids from the big day, capturing fun moments that the photographer may have missed. And if your friends share the images across their social media profiles, out-of-town friends and family can still get glimpses of your special day. There’s also something captivating about seeing your wedding from the point of view of your guests.

But the downside to being so “plugged in” is that your guests can get wrapped up in their phones, being part of the “look down” society, where instead of chatting, mingling and dancing, we stare at our screens and miss out on the socialization aspect of reception. And the biggest no-no? Having a guest forgot to silence their phone during the ceremony. Think about it: you’re looking into your partner’s eyes as you recite your vows and you get interrupted by the blast of a Verizon ringtone. Major no-no.

Reliving the Memories

After the chaos of your wedding winds down, the best way to relive the matrimonial highlights is cuddling with your partner and thumbing through your wedding album. It’s quite possibly the most important keepsake - other than your dress, of course. But as we mentioned, having digital images stored online gives your long-distance buddies a chance to check out your wedding photos.

Photo-sharing apps let your guests take pics with their smartphones and share them in a designated album; then you can download the best ones and post across your own social media profiles.

Time to Shop

Although part of the thrill in planning a wedding is hunting for the dress and trying on dozens of styles, brides are no longer relegated to zipping around from store to store. Thanks to the internet, you can browse shops with just a few clicks. The ease and time-saving factors can certainly have appeal for a busy bride-to-be. But beware of knock-offs: we’ve heard stories of women thinking that they’re getting a great deal on bridal couture, then having to handle the hassle of a no-go faux.  The bottom line? If you’re going to buy online, do research and only go with reputable vendors.
